Flood-proofing our Lives: a practical response to flooding

The aftermath of this particular rainstorm has weighed very heavily on my heart. I can feel the disappointment at my deepest core.

In 2026, lives lost because of rains? Families reeling from disaster. Homes submerged. In Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Kwame Nkrumah’s Accra?

To say I am disgusted by how this issue of perennial flooding has been handled by our authorities is an understatement. But I have awoken from my despair and gotten into fix-it mode.

So while we continue to demand better planning, proper drainage and accountability, we must also do what we can to protect our lives, homes, businesses and communities.

This guide is not to absolve duty-bearers of responsibility. Far from it. But until the systems work as they should, we must prepare better.

There are warnings of more heavy rain, so please go through this and implement what is relevant to you.

Stay safe and alert. Be part of the solution.

Wishing you warmth and sunshine,

Awura Abena Agyeman
